Role Models
Students are striving towards a higher end goal when they are in college, and that is to eventually be successful after graduation. In order to fulfill this goal they need to be competitive among their peers to fight for admission to schools for further education, internships, and job opportunities. The success of other people puts pressure on students to do more so they are competitive enough. Over the years successful people have raised the bar higher and higher which results in students having to catch up to their level. This overall success creates a society where everything is fast pace, there is no time for breaks: especially sleep. Jackie Anyanwu, a student at America University, made an interesting point when she said that when someone uses the excuse that they are too busy to get sleep her response is that the word busy, “has lost virtually all meaning in the last decade because its 2016 and everyone is busy.” This goes to show that it is not the individuals fault that they have so much on their plate that they cannot sleep because it is evident that everyone is busy in 2016 trying to keep up with the fast pace of society.
British professor, Russel Foster talks about the attitudes of historical figures, such as Thomas Edison, towards sleep in a Ted Talk. When there are successful influencers such as Thomas Edison who say “Sleep is a criminal waste of time and a heritage from our cave days,” it makes it easy for one to feel pressured to always be busy and not sleep, because if Thomas Edison thinks sleep is pointless than they should follow his ideals because he was successful.
